SYNOPSIS: ‘Honey’ depicts a tense relationship between a cold but well-meaning mother and her child after a traumatic experience left both unable to relate to each other. Martha is a middle-aged single mother, who cannot properly show her love and concern after experiencing abuse and emotional manipulation. Her only motivation in life is her child’s wellbeing, and without a healthy relationship between them, Martha seeks guidance in religion. Nic is a young transgender woman who cannot bring herself, to be honest with her mother but, with support from her friend, knows that eventually, she wants to properly come out to her. Martha and Nic were best friends when Nic was a child, and both desperately want to return to that place. But as survivors of abuse, neither can find a way to make that happen, until the tension on either side results in a magnificent fight that feels reminiscent of the pairs traumatic past, but ultimately reveals honesty, intentions, and at the very base level, an unbreakable love between mother and child.

SUMMARY: As part of our second-year assignment we were tasked to get into groups to produce a short film dealing with traumatic memory.

OVERALL: My group had many issues with the production of this film. One of the main issues was finding an actor especially since the protagonist of our film is a transgender. We had originally called out to many transgender organisations scouting for transgender actors however we were unsuccessful in finding one. In the end, we had to settle for a cisgender actress. Due to the time consumed by the scouting for a transgender actress we were unable to finish editing our film. Overall, the film could have been much worse however we had managed to shoot all the scenes we had on our script to the best of our abilities and find locations that fitted the scenes perfectly.
